WHAT IS EMDR?

EMDR stands for Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing. It is a form of emotional surgery to heal emotional wounds. It involves working with memories, body sensations, core-self beliefs, and emotions to eliminate the residential emotional, somatic, and cognitive remnants of painful past experiences.



Treatment includes a hand motion technique used by the therapist to guide the client's eye movements from side to side. Some studies have shown EMDR is effective for treating certain mental-health conditions.

What is EMDR Therapy?

The goal of EMDR is to fully process past experiences and sort out the emotions attached to those experiences. 

  • EMDR therapy occurs in eight phases: 
  • Preparation
  • Assessment
  • Desensitization
  • Body scan
  • Installation
  • Closure
  • Re-evaluation
  • Installation and Closure. 

Ultimately, clients learn to handle stressful situations themselves by dealing with them in a manner that helps them cope with them.

EMDR Is Effective At Treating Many Mental Health Conditions

EMDR was originally developed to treat the symptoms of: 
  • Post-traumatic stress disorder
  • Anxiety
  • Phobias. 
Some therapists also use EMDR to treat: 
  • Depression
  • Eating disorders
  • Schizophrenia
  • Sexual dysfunction
  • Stress caused by chronic disease

How EMDR Treatment Works

EMDR therapy is based on the adaptive information processing (AIP) model. It stimulates the brain in ways that lead it to process unprocessed or unhealed memories. EMDR helps people address and work through those memories, sensations, and emotions. Painful experiences will likely become less upsetting after EMDR treatment.

What You Can Expect From EMDR

EMDR sessions may be longer than regular therapy sessions. You should expect a typical session to last between 50-180 minutes. 

As the session begins, your therapist will ask you to recall details of a disturbing experience. The therapist will ask you to remember the frightening experience, such as sights, sounds, sensations, thoughts, and emotions. Then, you'd be guided through several sets of dual stimulation through eye movements, alternating audio stimulation, or oscillating vibrations in your hands via hand buzzers.  

This process will continue until the thoughts and beliefs about yourself become less disturbing and more positive. Most clients report a significant reduction in the intensity of the disturbance. The type of problem, severity, and amount of trauma may affect how many treatment sessions would be required. However, you should expect the treatment to produce results in one or two sessions, again depending on the type of trauma and severity of the experience.

According to over 20+ controlled studies exploring the effects of EMDR, yes EMDR does work.
